Sudan People's Liberation Army soldiers move towards frontline positions near Pana Kuach, Unity State, South Sudan in this Friday, May 11, 2012 photo. In late April, tensions between Sudan and South Sudan erupted into armed conflict along their poorly defined border. Thousands of SPLA forces have been deployed to Unity State where the two armies are at a tense stalemate around the state's expansive oil fields. Fighting between the armies lulled in early May after the U.N. Security Council ordered the countries to resume negotiations. The stars came out Monday night for the annual Met Ball, held to raise funds for the Art Costume Institute. Known by some as the East Coast Oscars for its amazing red carpet, the event is a must-do for designers who usually take a muse as their date for the evening. Trends for the evening included lace, ombre, feathers and see-through fabrics. A few women bucked the trend and wore short cocktail dresses, but most opted for full length gowsn.

Beyonce turned heads in a black Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci. The see-through gown was embellished with embroidery and feathers in an ombre pattern, which went from black to vivid purple at the hem. You can see photos of Beyonce in her gown here. Rihanna went for an elegant slim gown by Tom Ford; she accessorized with earrings by Repossi Berbere. Sarah Jessica Parker wore a lovely pastel gown by Valentino, who was her date. Emma Stone was with Lanvin's Alber Elbaz, who created her flirty red cocktail dress which was embellished with 3,000 plastic flowers and red crystals. She looked simply adorable.

Scarlett Johansson wore a stunning gown by Dolce & Gabbana that featured an elaborately embroidered and jeweled bodice and a flared netting hem and train. Hillary Swank looked gorgeous in a red gown by Michael Kors, who accompanied her to the ball. Take a look:
